S: Surviving the Hunger Games are all about surviving, you must survive the harsh conditions, hunger, opponents, deadly animals, etc. The people of the Capital are usually seen dressed in extravagant colors, with neon dyed hair and flashy outfits. Katniss helps move him to a nearby cave where they are well hidden. S — Snow Coriolanus Snow is the president of Panem. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. M: Mockingjay A combination of mocking bird and Jabberjay. The suspense is continuous throughout the book, right until the very end, and it leaves the reader wanting to know more about Katniss and her story.

Her main job is to keep her family well fed. It is one of a kind and deals with several important themes that are relevant even in our world. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. Where did the idea for The Hunger Games come from? Katniss finds Rue trapped under a net and releases her just before they are attacked by Marvel, a tribute from District 1. It also has many clunky phrases, which are usually tortological, or just grammatically incorrect.

I also felt like the book had no moral message, apart from a clumsy metaphor for people's obsession with reality TV. Power hungry politicians have the same mindsets. Katniss is reluctant to kill and doubts she can win the games until later in the book where her emotions change. Rue is to start small fires to distract the remaining Careers while Katniss detonates the booby-trapped mines surrounding the mound. The Capitol then sent off all the Jabberjays that were all male into the wild to die off, but instead they mated with female mockingbirds and created the Mockingjay. Good Job Suzanne Collins, and I would definitely read it again. The three fight each other and Cato grabs Katniss by the throat, holding her near the edge of the structure before Peeta manages to fight him off her.

It was a very frightening experience for her. Peeta suggests that the group wait for Katniss to eventually come down for food and water. Then she, along with the other tributes, are raised into the arena and a countdown to the Hunger Games begins. The other tribute from District 12 is a boy named Peeta. Although Katniss is supposed to mourn the deaths of other tributes her emotions are so badly described as to be almost nonexistent. A game show is held annually by the capital of Panem, in which they take one boy and one girl from each district, chosen by lottery to compete in the game. My site addresses a lot of the same subjects as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other.

Selected via lottery, one boy and one girl, aged between twelve and eighteen, from each of the twelve districts of Panem, compete, with one survivor celebrated as the victor. This book is set in a fictional version of America. New York Times Bestselling Author Suzanne Collins portrays this definition well in her 2008 novel, The Hunger Games. I gave it that high of a rating because, the unexpected seemed to happen a lot and things popped up all the time out of no where. The difference is twenty-four contestants go in, but only one can make it out alive. Similarly, the other characters in the novel are not provided space for their own development. She had to hunt, fish, gather, and trade in order to keep her family fed.

The Hunger Games A: Avox A traitor, who has had their tongue cut out. We understand the Games from her unique perspective — one that is disgusted by the Capitol and laced with sarcasm and irony. The Capitol selects a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twelve outlying districts to compete in the annual games, a televised fight-to-the-death. The 74th Hunger Games allows these characters to open up and discover their purpose in life. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and once girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Katniss is not chosen, but her younger sister Prim is chosen at only 12 years old.

My advise to anyone is to avoid this book like the plague and don't let crazed, quality illiterate Hunger Games fans tell you otherwise, although I understand that I am in the minority in disliking this novel. O: Orchards District 11 is full of orchards, the district is all about agriculture. They also set up traps designed to kill the tributes, or to drive them together when things have been getting too dull. Walking away, he wonders what to do about the two victors and the feelings of rebellion they may have created in the Districts. On the extravagant Hunger Games TV chat show, each tribute is introduced individually and interviewed by the flamboyant host, Caesar Flickerman. With this knowledge, and having just overheard the remaining Careers mention leaving Peeta for dead by the river, Katniss sets out in search of him. It is written in a matter-of-fact and superficial manner which does not quite capture the gravity of the content.

She is the only one who would volunteer because no one else wishes to die. After a night of hallucinations and nightmares, some involving her father, Katniss awakens beneath a tree trunk with leave bandages covering her stings. There can only be one winner, until the 74th Hunger Games, when Katniss and Peeta both return home. It is also when the names and pictures of the dead tributes are displayed. It actually says that the bow was crafted by her father and "a few others" whom she keeps hidden in the woods. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love. With characters all along the story that are very interesting with the main ones caring about others and not being selfish.

She wanted to show people where this could end up in the future. Katniss waits until Peeta has fallen asleep before leaving for the cornucopia. This is one of the most sophisticated and engaging novels I have ever read and I am sure that it will appeal to people of all ages, not just teenagers. I will certainly avoid the sequels, despite the protestations of my friends. It was published in 2008 and has sold millions of copies around the world.
