It is that lack of self that leads to his miserliness and his alienation from humanity. Scrooge can only not know it by deliberate intent. This book did give me a better opinion of Dickens but I must confess, I couldn't get into the second short story in this book so just read CC. He never regained consciousness, and the next day he died at Gad's Hill Place.

He saw them ugly, handsome, crippled, exquisitely formed. A Tale of Two Cities In this great novel Charles Dickens spares us no detail of the day-to-day horrors of the French Revolution. The reason is that this book deserves its status. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world. The air was filled with phantoms, wandering hither and thither in restless haste, and moaning as they went. I'm surprised how A Christmas Carol is a more celebrated work of Dickens than "The cricket on the hearth".

Katharine Kroeber Wiley, the daughter of a scholar and a sculptor, has a degree in English Literature from Occidental College. Then the story concludes with a predictable, yet reasonable ending. The theme of blindness or deliberate obtuseness, important in The Cricket on the Hearth and The Chimes, appears quite early in A Christmas Carol. Despite knowing the story and seeing the play many times, this is the first time I've gotten around to reading the book.
