"American Playhouse" A Raisin in the Sun (TV Episode 1989)
These flashbacks help to provide background information on the characters and their relationships with each other. The writer's reasoning seemed to be - why use 10 words when 100 will do? One character, Beneatha, faces an obstacle that is out of her control. The plot line surrounds the fight over an insurance check McNeil is waiting for, with Poitier spending somebody else's money even before they get it. Yet I was tearful throughout the movie, and was wiping away tears for the last half hour. Perhaps that's simply a sign of the changing times, but something tells me otherwise, and for that reason, Walter's change of heart fails to convince. Not only that but you might be constantly distracted by Claudia McNeil's resemblance to the boxer James Toney.
They all knew exactly what to do with the script from their previous work on the stage play version. So I grabbed the opportunity to check out the video from the library. Claudia McNeil as Lena Younger, is a paragon and archetype of feminine strength. However, there were some key differences between the two versions. The Youngers get ready to move into their new home. The actors in this movie are great actors.
Depending on how well you handle sad stories, this might be a staple you add to your collection, or it might be a film you watch only once but remember forever. Younger is a wise, loving mother and grandmother to her family. In the full play, you can argue that each of the four leads have equal screen time. And I'm glad I could discover Dee in a younger role no pun intended. Unfortunately, when their face is blown up 10 times on the big screen, so are their actions, and some scenes, because of this, come off a little too over the top dramatic than they should be realistically.
That could be said for every one of them. As for myself, I'll park this one as a keeper where Lorraine Hansberry has done the screenplay and provided the camera instructions for David Susskind. After all, I knew the plot. Racism and gender equality are heavily addressed throughout the play. An adaptation of an African-American family's struggle with poverty and one man's inner conflict with pride, failed dreams, and the pursuit of a better life for he and his family.
You will remember him, perhaps, as just as effective and even brilliant in his turn as one of the jurors in TWELVE ANGRY MEN 1957. Beneatha invites Joseph over, who gives her some Nigerian music and a wrapper and an invite to dinner on Monday. I experienced more emotion while watching the film than reading the book. Until then the movie seemed to drift. While she may not always agree with her children's decisions, she never stops loving them. The movie story is about a working-class family called the Youngers.
Sidney Poitier's A Raisin in the Sun exceeded my high hopes. Mark Lindner comes to offer to buy it back to avoid racial tension. It is overcrowded and the Younger family who lives there seems unhappy. However, it appears their fortunes are about to change as grandmother Younger is about to receive a large insurance payout. This film discusses many vital issues, such as racism, abortion, trust, family values, greed, and even atheism. Some stories leave you shattered.
Poitier is working as a chauffeur, both Dee and McNeil work and have worked as domestics, Sands is a young college student with the ideas of her time, but she's also been spoiled a whole lot. Yet, at the last moment, he rejects their offer and begins moving the family into their new home. Meanwhile, Ruth tries to get an abortion with help from Miss Tilly, who works at a salon. A substantial insurance payment could mean either financial salvation or personal ruin for a poor black family. Starletta is simultaneously daughter-in-law, mother, wife, and domestic worker.
As I grew older, I appreciated more what RAISIN IN THE SUN had to offer in illuminating the African American experience. We may have made some progress when it comes to race relations, but there is still a long way to go. This is a black family in changing times losing their way, and it's up to the no-nonsense McNeil to bring them all back together. One great thing about the movie is how little, they change from the play. When I found a copy of the 1989 American Playhouse live television performance, I was very excited to watch it. Based on Lorraine Hansberry's ground breaking play and starring most of the stage cast, "Raisin in the Sun" is a poignant portrayal of conflicting values and hopes in poor family, both between generations and between genders.
The Younger family are a working class black family with three generations, five people, living in a cramped apartment. Kim has a thirst for knowledge; when she understands her past, will it influence her future? Ruby Dee as Ruth Younger, feeling the walls closing in on her and simply wanting more room and sunlight than their cramped apartment on the south side of Chicago has to offer. As he did on stage, Leon gets the most out of his actors and with Hansberry's words, that's what carries the film. The play is good, the acting is great, the cheese level is fairly low, and Raisin has a true human touch to it that makes the audience feel for these poor characters, and it's a very hard trait to emulate. Some fathers become men at 35, some families get a status after five generations, time is all relative a notion when it comes to conciliate between the burdens of the past and the dreams of a brighter future. She is also very studious and wants to be a doctor. She was an acclaimed Tony and Emmy nominated actress, noted for her work on stage and in film.
