I loved the inclusion of the Navajo thought process and rational to solve the crimes. Eleanor Friedman-Bernal is an anthropologist interested in ceramics, who thinks she is close to a major new finding, identifying an individual pot maker by the art on the pots. Leaphorn, meanwhile, is on terminal leave and retiring after an unexpected death which has hit home. Self-made and class-conscious, Davis remembers having been put down by the upper class over the years, so she instinctively resents someone like Elliot. So it was a great relief to be left in the hands of a smart man who was able to think his way through a plot that eschewed the ridiculous and chose the clever. This is the second book where Leaphorn and Chee are teaming up to solve a mystery. He is a greedy and driven man, and his desire to succeed results in him digging about the ruins illegally. Joe and Jim often find their duties conflicting with their culture, and they struggle to maintain their identity in a white-dominant society.
Chee is working the same case from a different angle - someone has stolen a backhoe and is using it to illegally dig up priceless artifacts. It is this renewal of interest in life that helps to revitalize the detective in Leaphorn and drives him to pursue the case to its conclusion. He has been feeling the shock and loss ever since, and many believe his decision to retire is a result of his depression over losing his wife.
