It was definetely a fun read and I loved all the stories of the author's adventures. Up through this point Cooper had been a major part of the trip, had saved Peter's bacon a couple of times, and was his constant companion. Tommy offers Peter to come to his house for some food, but Peter rejects. I still don't want to read about beloved companions that are tragically killed! I know he didn't mean it in any mean way, but I couldn't help finding this humorous. He finds glimpses of Him along his journey, especially while living with the black family in North Carolina, but it's at the revival where the thunderbolt hits. Poverty can mean many different things. And any yankees that think the South is full of racist jerks, ought to give this a try, it's a good reminder that we are all decent people at heart, no matter where we live.

The sense I kept getting was that of reading a novel whose first-person narrator has, deliberately, not been given a slick way with wordsâbecause a slick narrator wouldn't work with this particular story.
