On those first few days of school, whenever Mrs. Zajac had the slightest doubt that students would obey her. We see Kelly School as a compelling microcosm of what is wrong—and right—with our educational system. Working in a classroom, I realize the time constraints on teaching students while also wanting to reach them emotionally. I have always adored Tracy Kidder's writing, but this one resonated with me as it touched on a subject I am passionate about -- teaching. I read some of the reviews of others and as always am discouraged when I read those which talk about how education has failed miserably. When angry or frustrated, he begins to slap himself, gouge a wound in his hand, or beat his head against his desk. Zajac going to do? Apparently it's a true story about a year in the life of a fifth grade teacher, Christine Zajac, but it's written by Tracy Kidder in a third-person limited voice. Though I plan to teach at a secondary level, unlike Mrs. But there is also an innocence that conspires to hold humanity togethe I read this many, many years ago but it has always remained one of my favorites because it showed me the life of a teacher - the struggles and successes. Chris realizes that actually teaching is, unfortunately, the only way to discover if one is meant to be a teacher, and she fears lest some unforeseen catastrophe occur during this period; on the whole, Miss Hunt succeeds.
The book still reads as quite fresh although no adult really seems to have figured out what "rap music" is yet , and the chapters about the life of Puerto Rican immigrants and the history of the town add an important dimension to the story as a whole. My heart broke for the kids in this book that just wanted attention, and my heart breaks for some of the kids in my class who just don't have the support at home they deserve and that many of their classmates have. To this day, I appreciate how my teacher chose to handle the situation; she had us all sit in a circle and ask whatever questions we wanted to ask. It was cut short to the tops of her ears, and swept back like a pair of folded wings. It was a tool she'd found most useful at the beginning of a year and after vacations. About half of her students are Hispanic; many come from broken homes.
In her experience, most children responded well to clearly prescribed rules and consequences, and she really didn't have many other tangible weapons. This was my third, and probably not last, reading of Among Schoolchildren. Wish that all parents and critics of this profession would read this. She has the class prepare and sign a card wishing him well, then tapes all the spare change she has in her purse to the back of it to make sure that the unpredictable Clarence does not reject what the class has labored to create. He totally deserved that A. Zajec was a good teacher who cared about her students, and a read about her was interesting. Granted, we didn't have the power to overcome poverty or provide parents who were loving and caring or make some students at least attempt to learn the material we were teaching but we didn't give up and we did make a large difference for some of those kids whose lives we have touched.
I was around eight years old, but I was able to understand, more or less, what had happened. Nonetheless, as Kidder gradually reveals, even Mrs. Kidder also writes that she feels guilty at being relieved to have his disruptions out of her classroom. Like Chris, I was consumed by the challenge of trying to understand every single student. She'd try to nip this in the bud. The sooner you realize she never said everybody in the room has to do the work except for Robert, the sooner you'll get along with her. She didn't plan to keep him long.
