British visual designer Alan Fletcher gathers together 534 pages of fascinating imagery and exposition. In short a good book that is overpriced. What is more, "Sideways" must be perused - well, naturally - sideways. You have to give names and sounds to all these animals.

Alan, I felt, had been written about, photographed and interviewed so many times that I was inhibited about what I could bring to light about this particular hero. I expected it to have the looseness of "Speck" but this book brings none of the sense of wonder, play, reflection I found in that great book. A large variety of images throughout the book contribute to making the user experience beautiful. This is the kind of book to keep nearby to entice curiosity and to take a chance and explore a random topic to read about. The Art of Looking Sideways is a primer in visual intelligence, an exploration of the workings of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination. This book is mindblowing.

He is consultant Art Director to Phaidon Press. Based on the ravingly good reviews I bought this book as a present and was incredibly disappointed. The boy clearly had a lot of energy to burn up. I must say that this book has becomed one of my favorites because on almost every page that I turn there is some new idea waiting to make me think about any project that I am working on. Humans can look at everything at once, whereas a machine scans everything bit by bit. To some, Alan could come across as a rather fearsome, almost grouchy individual, a view accentuated by his gravelly blunt voice.

I have had this book and for almost a decade. This book is a valuable collection of experiences, quotes, designer-gasms, observations and insights into life, the aesthetic, artistic and general human experience, by late master graphic designer Alan Fletcher. This has prompted me to make the sideboard our "shrine" to creativity. Feeling a little guilty, he had an idea. Describing himself as a visual jackdaw, master designer Alan Fletcher has distilled a lifetime of experience and reflection into a brilliantly witty and inimitable exploration of such subjects as perception, colour, pattern, proportion, paradox, illusion, language, alphabets, words, letters, ideas, creativity, culture, style, aesthetics and value. It doesn't take long until my brain is over-stimulated by it, so this book is useful to generate ideas. The advantage of this? At faculty meetings, when those around him might be overly pontificating about a point, Alan would always cut right to the chase, exactly like the immediacy of his work.

This book is arguably the greatest coffee table book of all time --- but really so much more.

She's the fifth generation in our family to pursue a career in the industry - she's a font junkie, and a gifted photographer, digital designer, and "traditional" graphic designer, too and I'm not just saying she's gifted because I'm her aunt! I think everyone should read this. Thus book was the most tiresome brick I have ever purchased. . Between the two of them there's no limit to creative possibility.
