CBE (Council of Biology Editors) citing is a citation style that is used in the field of biology and related sciences. It is based on the scientific method, which emphasizes the importance of citing sources in order to support the validity and reliability of scientific research.
In CBE style, citations are placed in parentheses within the text of the paper and include the last name of the author(s) and the year of publication. For example: "According to Smith (2020), the population of the endangered species has decreased significantly in recent years."
If the source has two authors, both names should be included in the citation. If there are three or more authors, the citation should include the first author's name followed by "et al." For example: "Recent studies by Jones et al. (2019) have shown that climate change is having a significant impact on the migration patterns of birds."
When citing a source that has been quoted or paraphrased in the text, the page number should also be included in the citation. For example: "According to a study conducted by Smith and Jones (2019), the population of the endangered species has decreased significantly in recent years (p. 10)."
In the reference list at the end of the paper, all sources cited in the text should be listed alphabetically by the last name of the first author. Each entry should include the following information:
- Author's last name, followed by the initials of their first and middle names
- Year of publication
- Title of the article or book
- Name of the journal or book publisher
- Volume and issue number (for articles)
- Page numbers (for articles)
For example:
Smith, J. M. (2020). The effects of climate change on endangered species. Journal of Environmental Science, 35(2), 123-135.
Jones, T. K., & Smith, J. M. (2019). The impact of climate change on bird migration patterns. Nature, 500(7463), 45-50.
It is important to accurately and consistently follow CBE citation style in order to give credit to the original sources of the information and ideas used in your research. Proper citation also helps to establish the credibility of your work and allows others to easily locate and verify the sources you have used.
