Double Jeopardy is a 1999 crime thriller film directed by Bruce Beresford and starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones. The film follows the story of Libby Parsons, a woman who is falsely accused and convicted of murdering her husband, Nick.
The film begins with Libby and Nick on a boating trip, during which Nick mysteriously disappears. Libby is arrested and charged with murder, despite her insistence that she is innocent. She is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

Who are the main characters in double jeopardy? Framing someone for murder is a crime, after all. While in the clink, she learns from a fellow inmate that under the Double Jeopardy clause of the Fifth Amendment to the Eluding her parole officer, Travis Lehman Tommy Lee Jones , Libby tracks Nick down to New Orleans, where he has started a new life under an assumed name. Or, wouldn't the father at least worry that the son would eventually turn him in? In reality, if our heroine kills the nasty husband now, she can be prosecuted, because the murder would take place in a different time and place than the non- murder for which she was earlier convicted. Judd stars as Libby Parsons, and as the film opens she's departing for a sailing trip with her husband Nick Bruce Greenwood , leaving her four-year-old son Matty Benjamin Weir in the care of her friend Angela Annabeth Gish. A lot of plot holes in this very mediocre movie, but this isn't one. It would be pretty surprising if the kid is calling some other dude "dad" after that short of a time. Then he sees the car has another flat tire, and a police siren is heard.

Libby scoffs at his lies. Young enough that it's not crazy to assume that the kid will not retain crisp, accurate memories of everything. Libby poses a challenge to the cynical officer, one that forces him to face up to his own failings while pitting him against his superiors and law enforcement colleagues. In the ensuing struggle, Nick is about to shoot Lehman again, but Libby recovers her gun and kills Nick. What if Libby really did just confront Nick and shoot him in cold blood — would she have been protected under the Double Jeopardy clause? Nick claims he faked his death in order to provide her with the insurance money, not believing she would be convicted. Libby emerges with Lehman's gun and both she and Lehman tell Nick that she can kill him with impunity because of the double jeopardy rule.

Lehman insists they go back to Washington to win her pardon. Another police car pursues them, but Lawson drives it off the road, flipping it.
