THE DROVER’S WIFE, an Australian high
Both know that justice in this nation caught between two worlds can be as brutal as its landscape. The bushwoman fought a plague of pleuro-pneumonia among her animals by giving them medicine and practicing bloodletting, but the disease still killed her two best cows, which also made her cry. What does a drover do? The last date is today's date — the date you are citing the material. The fact that Leah portrayed The Drover's wife in this book just seems wrong. Only Molly was there to help her and her children. So having Leah on the cover and in the movie is misleading.
From television serials to play adaptations, it has been rewritten, retold, and re-examined, over and over again, and with each reiteration, another aspect of Australian culture, or history, is opened up. I appreciate the new breath with which Purcell revived this iconic classic, but really would have preferred her to create a totally new work. The snake that the woman battles against is a representative of her enemy which is the bush. Molly is confronted by a fugitive Aboriginal man, Yadaka. Both are unable to catch the snake, however, which slips under the floorboards of the house. The drover never appears as a character, while the protagonist is known only as his wife, thereby overlooking her important role in the outback. This indicates a technical aspect that Lawson mastered in his short stories: the construction of a coherent fiction on the flimsiest of plots. One of the children discovers a snake and calls for the mother.

So having Leah on the cover and in the movie is misleading. Is it likely that Tommy will keep his promise not to go droving? So much thought provoking detail in such a compact play. But in their short time together, Yadaka shows Molly a secret truth, and the strength to imagine a different path. Indeed, the prose seems disjointed. Unexpected twists hook the reader and I found myself unable to put the book down until I had fi Wow! Possibly one of the best Australian texts I've ever read. All the reviews and recommendations that raved about this play and I am still blown away.
