"Elephant" is a short story by Raymond Carver that was first published in the New Yorker in 1988. The story is narrated by a man who is visiting the zoo with his wife and young son. As they walk through the elephant exhibit, the narrator becomes fixated on the elephant, and begins to contemplate the animal's thoughts and feelings.
The narrator reflects on the elephant's life in the zoo, and wonders what it must be like for the elephant to be confined to such a small space. Who she has made mistakes with in the past. He worries night and day, and he loses sleep over his growing debt. They seem just as ordinary and interesting as any of the other students. He realizes that dependency is not necessarily a negative type of relationshipâhe wants to support his family through their difficult moments without bitterness or resentment because he loves them and because it brings his life meaning. First of all, a brother who requires loaning him some money and never pays back yet asks for more money later. Now that he has a more empathetic view of his family, his own problems no longer seem so bad. He hopes that his son made it to Germany and found happiness there.
Though there is a sense of struggle for the ex-wife , it soon becomes clear that the narrator is also struggling to let go of the past. All she knew was that she would get her money the first of each month, even if it had to come all the way from Sydney. This may symbolize the closing of the door on her past. The narrator has never been to Australia and he has no reason to go thereâcutting them off and moving was always an empty threat, which he realizes everyone else must know. Perhaps, this is what life is like. Consequently, she asks her father for support. What we also know as readers is that the narrator lives alone, spending much of his time sitting in his chair at home too tired after work to do anything.
He hopes that his daughter is doing okay, and he decides to write her a letter to wish her well. In the second dream, he sees that he is back with his wife and kids living happily â but he then remembers attacking his son while he was drunk. His former wife really did not care about what was going on. Finally, the narrator must pay alimony to his ex-wife every month. After letting go of his distressing thoughts about financial matters, he feels happier. Then coming in the list is his mother who is greedy.
Carver was born into a poverty-stricken family at the tail-end of the Depression. They calmly watch Nazi programs on TV and purchase firearms over the Internet. I didn't have to. He has a job, after all. There is the idea that her approval or forgiveness will help him move on.
As the writer taught, people who borrows money and does not pay back would not come back asking for more money but his brother did. Despite the fact that the narrator is supporting them, he appears to have accepted his role as a leader or supporter, like his father and wishes all his family well. He helps them not only because he is guilty but also because he holds profound, almost paternal affection towards all of them. Literally, when the author used the word elephant as the title for his short story, he made me think of the narrator in the story as hardworking because elephants are hardworking creatures.
