She is a great actress, but as soon as she became an adult, her sexual identity started to go from negative to positive. Disguising herself as a man, Eliza opens a new world of opportunities. I love Aurora and her storytelling and how she overcame her nightmares and bringing the web of mystic roots together in unison to understand and experience the pangs of a second-love. Eliza Sommers soon faced the dreadful consequences to the senseless decisions she has made when she learns that she is in fact pregnant, moments after Joaquin, the father of the fetus, is struck by the gold fever, thus escapes Chile to head to California in attempt to become rich. Nevertheless, Equiano also endured tormented pain when he was parted from his sister while she was the only comfort to him at once. I thought that this was a fantastic read, one of the best books that I have read all year. If I didn't write my soul would dry up and die.
For most of the novel, Aurora is the focus of attention, but she seems a dull and uninspired creation, whereas I found myself wishing that some of the minor characters had been better developed. Joes place becomes a temporary home for Eliza, and she sees that there is much more to Joe Bonecrusher than being a pimp. A certain fatal flaw is the inability to let go.
