Enchantress from the Stars is a science fiction novel written by Sylvia Engdahl. It was first published in 1970 and has since become a classic in the genre. The story follows Elana, a young woman from a distant planet called Ethos, who is sent to Earth to evaluate the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with the inhabitants.
Elana is an enchantress, a member of a highly advanced and technologically advanced society that has mastered the art of manipulating energy. The Ethosians have long been aware of the existence of other intelligent life in the universe, and have made it their mission to spread their knowledge and wisdom to other civilizations. Upon arriving on Earth, Elana assumes the identity of a young Earthling named Elaine and begins her evaluation of the planet. She quickly realizes that the people of Earth are not as advanced as the Ethosians, and that their society is plagued by conflict and violence. Despite this, Elana is determined to find a way to help the people of Earth, and sets out to learn as much as she can about their culture and way of life.
As she delves deeper into the mysteries of Earth, Elana becomes increasingly disillusioned with her own society and begins to question the Ethosian way of life. She comes to realize that her people's obsession with technological advancement has caused them to lose touch with their own humanity, and that their intervention in the affairs of other civilizations may not always be beneficial.
Despite the challenges she faces, Elana remains determined to find a way to bridge the gap between her world and the people of Earth. In the end, she is able to establish a successful diplomatic mission and helps the people of Earth to achieve a greater understanding of their own place in the universe.
Enchantress from the Stars is a thought-provoking and beautifully written novel that explores themes of cultural differences, technological advancement, and the importance of understanding and compassion. It is a must-read for fans of science fiction and anyone who is interested in the human condition.

She has also written a nonfiction book, The Planet-Girded Suns: Our Forebears' Firm Belief in Inhabited Exoplanets, of which updated and expanded paperback and ebook editions were published in 2012, and three collections of her essays. I was utterly enthralled, and saved up until I could buy my own copy -- my very first hardback fiction purchase! Mainly, generic masculine nouns and pronouns--the use of which was standard in 1970 when the book was first published--have been replaced with gender-neutral language. Without this particular theme, the main point of the story, which is to develop feminism and bring it to the readers attention. Is there a sequel to Enchantress from the Stars? I couldn't state her age in terms of our years, since it's not said whether she's descended from people of Earth. They're tasked with preventing civilizations like the Empire from meddling in the affairs of more primitive planets, while also preventing the Empire from knowing that there are much more advanced planets out there. It's a Newbury Honor Book, but definitely one that seems to have fallen through the cracks. All three contain material unsuitable for children. The different peoples in Enchantress, however, are of different species, some of which are biologically older than others and whose civilizations have existed for longer periods of time.

What gives the Federation the right to decide that Younglings aren't mature enough to join, or even to visit Federation worlds as individuals? She is very into her exclamation points and dramatic statements. That was part of the bargain when Father decided we should go in the first place; I agreed to prepare for First Phase exams on shipboard, to make up for the time I would be missing at the Academy. Eating and sleeping can be sacrificed more easily than dealing with your emotional needs while on assignment. If you are in 5th or 6th grade you should start with Enchantress from the Stars, and you probably won't like any of the others until you are older. Lives are worthless to them compared to their lofty principles.

This novel also trips over one of my pet peeves. I first read this book when I was in the sixth grade, and it changed my life. Elana, a member of an interstellar civilization on a mission to a medieval planet, becomes the key to a dangerous plan to turn back an invasion. She also creates a number of plot problems by being quite stupid. You can get a printable list of all my books at the Ad Stellae Books link there. They can almost certainly make charcoal. So at length they were persuaded to take the familiar way, and for the rest of that day they continued along the river bank.

With this idea Ella baker was trying to bring democracy to organizations. Each character comes from a race at different stages of development: Georyn's people are at what we'd call a medieval level of society, Elana is a member of an extremely advanced civilization that has moved past war and conquest, and Jarel's society is technologically advanced but still trying to conquer other worlds.

All of which are used in the Enchantress. I don't agree that the Andrecians have no 'technology'. Undoubtedly it would not take the form of conversation as it has to be presented in writing; I suspect it would be entirely wordless. Insofar as the misconception attracts readers who enjoy fantasy more than typical science fiction, calling it a mixture is a good thing; yet it also leads to the assumption that none of the story is meant to be taken literally. Told from three different viewpoints, this story of members of an advanced civilization trying to protect a fledgling society from being conquered by another race of starfarers gets at the heart of what it means to be civilized.

They're shown as comic-book style spacemen with ray guns for the same reason that the fairy tale portion of the story is told in a traditional, stylized form. Stories must arise in an author's mind before they can be put into words; it takes more than writing ability to create fiction, and more than speculation about the universe. This brings them to seek out the aid of a mysterious Lady, an Enchantress, who lives in a hut in the forest. The Corps believes only in material technology and sees the primitive natives as subhuman. The Federation explorers are also pretty willing to sacrifice anyone, from their own society or from any other, to achieve their goals. The idea that societies go through stages similar to the development of human children is a fallacious one. If you are an adult and the controversial medical theme of Stewards of the Flame appeals to you, then read it before Promise of the Flame.
