Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer that tells the story of a young boy named Oskar Schell who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his father in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The story begins on the morning of September 11, 2001, when Oskar's father, Thomas Schell, rushes out of the apartment to attend to a mysterious errand. Oskar later discovers that his father was on the 106th floor of the North Tower when it was hit by a plane. Foer was sleeping off jet lag after returning to New York City from a trip to Spain, when he was woken by a phone call from a friend: "He said, 'You have to turn on the TV, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. He is an eccentric, intelligent, and clever young boy who self-identifies as a number of things including inventor, amateur Oskar's mother, Linda Schell, referred to as "Mom" by Oskar in the book, cares for her family greatly. After discovering Black is a name, not a reference to a color, he decides to use his weekends to visit every person in the New York City telephone book with the last name of Black. For the last, unfinished Expedition, Dad gave Oskar a map of Central Park as his only clue. They both knew it was a lie. Anna became pregnant shortly before bombs were dropped on her house.

He gives his mother his scrapbook from his adventures filled with pop-ups and pull tabs, titled "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Oskar and his dad were very much in tune to one another and had a similar type of intelligence. That those named Black form a cross-section of the metropolis? Oskar tells Thomas everything—his father's death, the mysterious key, how his mother doesn't seem to care where he's going or what he's doing.
