Fire on the Mountain is a novel by Edward Abbey, published in 1962. The story follows the adventures of a group of rebels who seek to protect a mountain from being developed into a ski resort.
At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to the main character, George Washington Hayduke III, a Vietnam War veteran who has returned home to the Southwest desert. Hayduke is a fierce and independent individual who is deeply committed to preserving the natural beauty of the land. Along with his three friends – Bonnie Abbzug, a feminist activist; Doc Sarvis, a former scientist; and Seldom Seen Smith, a desert rat – Hayduke sets out to stop the construction of the ski resort, which he believes will destroy the mountain and its ecosystem.
The group's efforts to stop the development of the mountain are met with resistance from the developers and the authorities, who are determined to see the project through to completion. Despite their efforts, the rebels are able to disrupt the construction and sabotage the machinery being used to clear the mountain.
Throughout the novel, we see the characters grappling with the ethical and moral implications of their actions. Ralph is established here not only as a political leader but also as a parental figure whose job is to reassure the scared boys and protect them from their own fears and doubts. Plus it doesn't even really show us what this socialist society is like, beyond that they are landing on Mars and they have some cool tech.
