Gabriel Martin, also known as Gabriel Prosser, was a slave and blacksmith who led a rebellion in 1800 in Richmond, Virginia. He is often referred to as the "Patriot" because he fought for the freedom and rights of his fellow African American slaves.

Born into slavery around 1775, Gabriel was owned by Thomas Prosser, a wealthy plantation owner in Henrico County, Virginia. Despite being a skilled blacksmith, Gabriel was treated poorly and subjected to the same harsh conditions and abuses as other slaves on the plantation. However, Gabriel was determined to fight for his freedom and the freedom of his fellow slaves.

In the summer of 1800, Gabriel began organizing a rebellion with the help of other enslaved and free African Americans. The plan was to seize the city of Richmond, overpower the white militia, and free all the slaves in the area. The rebellion was scheduled to take place on August 30, 1800, and Gabriel and his followers had gathered a significant number of weapons and supplies.

Unfortunately, the rebellion was foiled before it could even begin. A white informant alerted the authorities to the plot, and Gabriel and his followers were arrested. Gabriel and several of his followers were subsequently tried and sentenced to death. Despite the efforts of his lawyers and supporters, Gabriel was hanged on October 10, 1800, along with several of his followers.

Gabriel Martin's rebellion was a significant event in the history of slavery in the United States. It was one of the largest slave rebellions in the country at the time and demonstrated the determination of enslaved people to fight for their freedom. Gabriel is remembered as a hero and a patriot for his bravery and his willingness to risk everything to fight for the rights of his fellow African Americans.
