I secretly, and desperately, wanted to be a girl. . Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear? It sort of all works out in the end and Georgy would appear to be happy in the final decisions she makes. How wonderful to find an enjoyable book that has zero likeable characters. Forster co-wrote the screenplay with the wonderful Peter Nichol The film is fairly true to the book - truer than many film adaptations of other books. While in the midst of an argument with Meredith over her cavalier attitude to her pregnancy, Jos suddenly kisses Georgy and tells her that he loves her.

Beyer has been a showgirl, a sex worker and now a poli. So mixed feelings but on the whole I'm glad I read it. Her most recent books have been Diary of an Ordinary Woman and The Unknown Bridesmaid. The rather unconventional menage a trois at the story's centre is constantly surprising, not least because of the 2nd female character, Meredith. Georgina's life story is told with as much respect by the filmmakers as there is honesty from Georgina herself. Georgy Girl, the movie has always been one of my favorites. The story of a vindictive, unwed mother, a swinging London musician, and their depressed roommate who fears sex and adulthood, Georgy Girl is a charming, sincere time capsule of the mid-60's.

Why is she such a doormat? I did love the writing style, and the descriptive nature of Margaret Forster's writing though. . A short but dense book that is pretty bleak from start to finish. Furthermore, as the story get heavier good 60's term there , George gets more decisive, even if it's more an I loved this book. Georgy could have been likeable, but I was annoyed at her because she didn't really like herself and spent most of her time trying to please others. She DOES get the love she was dreaming of and it's NOT for James Mason! This is Margaret Forster's third book, published way back in 1965 when she was only in her mid-twenties herself. It actually felt like it was set ten years earlier and whilst reading it, I saw the scenes in black and white rather than full colour.

It made me wonder what had caused such a lack of self-esteem. She is pregnant to her boyfriend of the moment, Jos, with whom Georgy is madly in love. It was also used as the theme song for the film version of this book. It becomes clear that Georgy cares more for the baby than for having an adult relationship with Jos. Rather than enjoyable I did find the book interesting, but I didn't really find any of the characters very enjoyable! Georgy doesn't have to be likeable, however, for the reader to feel for her plight. I thought it would be a typical coming of age type book describing life in the mid-60's before the sexual revolution really took off. Margaret Forster was educated at the Carlisle and County High School for Girls.

If you loved the book for anything other than its comments on being a woman in this period with little choice over your life, your body, your sexual desires then you have probably focussed on the wrong thing. I had no idea that the movie had been based on a book until I came across it here on Goodreads. Forster and are her other books better? I guess I'm not really sure what the point of this was. The most interesting part of the book right now is the love contract. Granted this book isn't for everybody, but those wishing to broaden their understanding of feminist fiction should definitely give this book a read. I loved the movie and the book. For younger readers this will be a period piece.

Brought up in Kensington by her parents, Ted and Doris who are live-in servants of rich socialite James. I really loved a good chunk of this book, in part because I didn't love all the characters. I think the ending was very honest, in a way, but because of the way it turned out, I couldn't whole heartedly give it five stars.

What really is noticeable is that there are barely any likeable characters at all. They were all really quite awful and unlikeable. Combined with the wikipedia article about the book or some other review that said it captured the mod culture, I am stoked. . It was interesting enough to look up the movie on IMDb and wow--what glowing reviews it gets, from people who say it has stood the test of time. I loved that the comic moments were really comic i. Anyone growing up in the 1960s and 1970s would instantly recognise that song by the Seekers, from the film by the same name.
