Over the last few months, I have recited and recorded the first 23 songs of Geetanjali. When sleep overcame me I lay upon the bed that was for my lord, and on waking up I found I was a prisoner in my own treasure-house. I know everyone at some point in their spiritual journey had felt this, we do japa or sadhana for our isht in the morning and feel the divine love as an after effect but as soon as we start our day in this material world we forget our divine and get involved in the worldly pleasures. Light, oh where is the light! Yes, there is a rumor that it has its dwelling where, in the fairy village among shadows of the forest dimly lit with glow-worms, there hang two timid buds of enchantment. Under thy great sky in solitude and silence, with humble heart shall I stand before thee face to face. His poetry and prose compares with Goethe or Dante in its impact on both his home of India and the world. We have to tread our own journeys to the unknown.

Thankfully two verses are sometimes just enough to catch a glimpse of the spirit which motivates you to find your copy and read and reread it several times. I will reread it time and again. On the seashore of endless worlds the children meet with shouts and dances. Written as an Ode to the Supreme Master, these 103 poems highlight the many realizations Tagore had under the crimson sky, casting his forlorn eye and pensive heart. Thy face is bent from above, thy eyes look down on my eyes, and my heart has touched thy feet. When we do this, every form of death and dying looms on the horizon as an inevitable nightmare, something we spend our lives wishing will not happen. They build their houses with sand and they play with empty shells.

One of the most beautiful collection of poems that I have ever read. But though these prose translations from Rabindranath Tagore have stirred my blood as nothing has for years, I shall not know anything of his life, and of the movements of thought that have made them possible, if some Indian traveller will not tell me. The other 50 were from his drama Achalayatan and eight other books of poetry. He explores the abundance of human experience from birth to death and beyond. Let My Country Awake Where the mind is without fear and the head held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action; Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let Let My Country Awake Where the mind is without fear and the head held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action; Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. Tagore wrote in Bengali which I have heard is a sweet and lovely language as well as a "literary powerhouse". Don't let my writing decide if you should read this book or not, read it nevertheless.
