The poor girl laid me on her bosom, and fell a weeping with shame and grief. The farmer, by this time, was convinced I must be a rational creature. We then set sail, and had a good voyage till we passed the Straits of Madagascar; Finding it was like to overblow, we took in our sprit-sail, and stood by to hand the foresail; but making foul weather, we looked the guns were all fast, and handed the mizzen. But when he heard my voice, and found what I delivered to be regular and rational, he could not conceal his astonishment. I could only look upwards; the sun began to grow hot, and the light offended my eyes. But they thought the want of moral virtues was so far from being supplied by superior endowments of the mind, that employments could never be put into such dangerous hands as those of persons so qualified; and at least, that the mistakes committed by ignorance, in a virtuous disposition, would never be of such fatal consequences to the public weal as the practices of a man whose inclinations led him to be corrupt, and who had great abilities to manage, to multiply, and defend his corruptions. And when the matter was debated in council, the wisest part of the ministry were of my opinion. But being now a nardac of the highest rank in that empire, such offices were looked upon as below my dignity, and the emperor to do him justice , never once mentioned them to me. He had the character of a great miser; and, to my misfortune, he well deserved it by the cursed advice he gave my master, to show me as a sight upon a market-day in the next town, which was half an hour's riding, about two-and-twenty miles from our house. The author, by a lucky accident, finds means to leave Blefuscu; and, after some difficulties, returns safe to his native country.

I offered to lie down, that he might the more conveniently reach my ear; but he chose rather to let me hold him in my hand during our conversation.
