The Happy Prince is a short story written by Oscar Wilde in 1888. It tells the story of a statue of a prince who is covered in gold leaf and precious stones, and who watches over the city from his perch atop a tall column. Despite his apparent happiness, the Happy Prince is unhappy because he cannot help the poor and suffering people he sees below.
One day, a swallow flying south for the winter stops in the city and sees the statue. The Happy Prince asks the swallow to pluck out his jewels and give them to the poor and suffering people in the city. The swallow agrees, and over the course of the winter, he removes all of the prince's jewels and gives them to the poor.
As the winter grows colder and the swallow becomes weak from hunger, the Happy Prince asks him to stay with him and keep him company. The swallow agrees, and when he finally dies, the Happy Prince's heart breaks.
On the day that the swallow dies, the city council decides to remove the statue and melt it down. As they do so, they find that the Happy Prince's lead heart has been revealed, and they realize that he was not made of gold and jewels at all, but was simply a statue of lead.
