Children have a much better life. There is such a strong connection and bond between them that bypasses class and another delicate boundary of religion in Ireland at that time. They are all young and are now in a situation which it seems clear none of them are ready for with a lot of older people who are putting a lot of pressure on their shoulders and should know better. Each enlists for his own reasons, and if we know anything of the Irish experience of WWI, we know before we start to read that this will not be a happy story. Alec and Jerry were alright and Alicia was an absolute wagon, while Bennet was a bit strange but interesting.

Jerry states that it is the waiting that is the most difficult and the Major has warned Alec to be sure his men shoot straight. However much Alec tries to please her, nothing seems enough. We start at the end with Alec awaiting his execution but we have no idea why he is to be killed, why he hates his mother and no idea why he would recite a children's rhyme. I liked what I got to read of it at the time but when you are studying a book it can be difficult to sit back and just enjoy the book. It is as important for an author to know what to put in as what to leave out. The plot revolves around WWI and class consciousness and male friendship, and it's a painful but beautiful story that I'm glad I spent my last day in Ireland sitting outside in Merrion Square reading.

I think it's because the focus of the book is on the relationship between Alec and Jerry rather than more broadly on the war, so even in a mere 156 pages you get so attached to the characters and the love between them.
