A jail tour can be a powerful and eye-opening experience, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of inmates and the inner workings of the criminal justice system. As someone who has had the opportunity to participate in a jail tour, I can attest to the impact it had on my understanding and perception of the prison system.
During the tour, we were guided through various parts of the jail, including the intake area, the dormitories, and the recreational facilities. We also had the chance to speak with some of the inmates and ask them about their experiences.
One of the most striking aspects of the tour was the sheer size of the jail. It was easy to get lost in the maze of corridors and cells, and the sheer number of inmates was staggering. I was also struck by the strict rules and regulations that governed every aspect of life in the jail. Inmates were not allowed to have any personal belongings, and their movements were closely monitored at all times.
But perhaps the most poignant part of the tour was speaking with the inmates themselves. Many of them shared stories of their lives before and after incarceration, and the impact that prison had had on their families and communities. It was a humbling reminder of the human cost of crime and the importance of rehabilitation.
Overall, my jail tour experience was a valuable and thought-provoking one. It gave me a greater understanding of the challenges and realities of the criminal justice system, and the vital role that rehabilitation plays in the lives of inmates. It also reminded me of the importance of addressing the root causes of crime and working towards a more just and fair society.
Prison Experience as a Visitor and Inmate
Inmates were provided toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap, wash rag, and a thin grey itchy blanket. My experience with the county jail was not so pleasant. It is surrounded by the green hills and snowfall mountain in the north side. The Wabash county jail seemed to have nicer staff to me. Stanislaus County was affected by this and was faced with responsibility for non-serious, non-violent, and non-sex offenders, as well as supervision of lower level adult parolees returning from state prisons.
Prison is almost entirely open to look around which was fantastic! The Haunted Jail is currently being remodeled. The inmates could be waiting for trial or protective custody. If they were going to see me I wanted them to see me out and not in an orange jumpsuit. People who have not been incarcerated like to talk about people who have been. Each cell gave you a different view of prison life and the tasks and privations you had to suffer. The Gaol has re-opened as a visitor attraction after extensive renovations and today you can take a guided tour of the prison. The tour was great, its self-directed but there are very good audio and videos in the cells where the students could learn lots at their own pace.
As well as, I get to learn about the way things are done in the jail setting. Our group consisted of a 71 year old and a 6 year old and we all got something from our visit. Tours are conducted by one of our expert guides. The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. They also had a commissary.

There were certain rules and I could only list immediate family and then after a certain amount of time I could add cousins and friends.
