He is thwarted in his wish to study, in his religious and scholastic ambitions, and in his desire for physical love and familial happiness. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. As always there is much useful criticism of society's petty and trivial and strictured norms that may not apply to Hardy's epoch's "problems of living" but are still more or less applicable to the oppressions and unnatural problems we as a society and individuals contend with in the 21st century. Jude reflects: Strange that his first aspiration — towards academical proficiency — had been checked by a woman, and that his second aspiration — towards apostleship — had also been checked by a woman. Attitudes to sex, to education, and to the role of women have altered vastly except within the narrowest, most restrictive communities: society today accepts pre-marital or non-marital sex; the education of women has long been taken for granted and women now have the opportunity to lead independent lives; and gender equality, though perhaps not yet perfectly achieved, is an accepted goal.
Arabella is one of shallowest characters I have ever come across. And yet it cannot be denied that huge changes have taken place in the last hundred years. However, in fiction and in reality our personalities are much a product of upbringing and circumstances. At the risk of being politically incorrect, Sue is a flibbertigibbet and needs help but certainly not in todays way of mad doctoring with tortorous drugs that while internal and hidden are worse than the psychiatric treatments in the book of its era. Sue is not completely asexual, but on the scale of sexual desire she is at the opposite end from Jude. He has been a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company, and may be heard in radio plays, documentaries and arts programs. But the tragedy of Jude the Obscure is more particular than general.
