Max Fisher was a philanthropist and businessman who was instrumental in the development of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Born in 1867 in Ohio, Fisher began his career as a traveling salesman before eventually settling in Detroit, where he became involved in the oil industry. In the early 1920s, Fisher became interested in the idea of creating a massive sculpture on the side of a mountain as a way to promote tourism in the region.
Fisher's idea for Mount Rushmore was inspired by the iconic statues of ancient Greek and Roman leaders, which were carved into the sides of mountains as a way to honor and remember their accomplishments. He believed that creating a similar monument in the United States would be a powerful way to honor some of the country's most iconic leaders and pay tribute to the nation's rich history.
To bring his vision to life, Fisher formed the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society and worked tirelessly to raise the funds needed to complete the project. He traveled across the country, giving lectures and making appeals to potential donors, and eventually succeeded in raising the necessary funds.
Construction of Mount Rushmore began in 1927, with sculptor Gutzon Borglum leading a team of workers as they carved the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln into the side of the mountain. The project was completed in 1941, and Mount Rushmore has since become one of the most iconic and beloved landmarks in the United States.
Fisher's efforts to create Mount Rushmore were not without controversy. The land on which the monument was built was originally sacred to the Lakota Sioux tribe, and the construction of the monument led to tension and conflict between the tribe and the federal government. Despite these challenges, however, Mount Rushmore remains a symbol of American pride and a tribute to the nation's founding fathers and greatest leaders.
Today, Max Fisher is remembered as a visionary and a champion of American patriotism. His legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of Mount Rushmore, which continues to draw millions of visitors from around the world each year.
