In this scene, we meet Iago, the play's main antagonist, who is scheming to ruin Othello's life. Iago is envious of Cassio, a lieutenant in the Venetian army, and wants to ruin his reputation. To do this, he convinces Roderigo, a wealthy suitor of Desdemona's, to stir up trouble between Cassio and Othello. Iago tells Roderigo to "put money in thy purse" and "be merry," promising that he will help him win Desdemona's love.
We also see the arrival of Othello and Desdemona in Cyprus. Othello is a brave and noble soldier, but he is also vulnerable because of his love for Desdemona. Desdemona is a strong and independent woman who has defied her father's wishes by eloping with Othello.
