The first act of Shakespeare's play "Othello" sets the stage for the tragic events that unfold in the following acts. The play opens with a conversation between two characters, Roderigo and Iago, who are discussing their mutual hatred for Othello, a military general in the Venetian army. Iago, who is Othello's ensign, reveals that he is jealous of Othello's success and wants to bring him down.
As the act progresses, we are introduced to Othello and his new wife, Desdemona. Othello is a brave and accomplished military leader, but he is also a man of color, which makes him a target of racism and prejudice from those around him. Desdemona, on the other hand, is a strong and independent woman who defies societal expectations by marrying Othello against her father's wishes.
