Srinivasa Ramanujan was a highly influential Indian mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of mathematics in the early 20th century. He was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, a small town in the Tamil Nadu state of India.
Ramanujan's family was poor and he received little formal education, but he had a natural talent for mathematics. He taught himself advanced mathematics from books and was particularly interested in infinite series and number theory. In 1913, he sent a letter to G.H. Hardy, a prominent British mathematician, describing some of his results and asking for help in getting them published. Hardy was impressed by Ramanujan's work and arranged for him to come to England to work with him at the University of Cambridge.
In England, Ramanujan made many important contributions to mathematics, including the development of the Hardy-Ramanujan number, which is an integer that arises in the study of partitions in number theory. He also made significant contributions to the theory of elliptic functions and the theory of modular forms.
Ramanujan's work had a profound impact on the development of modern mathematics and he is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. In recognition of his contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918, becoming the first Indian to be so honored.
Despite his many accomplishments, Ramanujan's life was cut short by illness. He returned to India in 1919 and died in 1920 at the young age of 32. However, his legacy lives on and he is remembered as a pioneer in the field of mathematics and an inspiration to mathematicians around the world.
