Sindbad the sailor is a character from a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories known as The Thousand and One Nights, or The Arabian Nights. The tales of Sindbad are some of the most famous and well-loved stories from this collection, and have been retold and adapted countless times over the centuries.
Sindbad is a wealthy merchant who lives in the city of Baghdad during the reign of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Despite his wealth and status, Sindbad is not content to simply live a life of luxury and ease. Instead, he yearns for adventure and travel, and sets out on a series of seven voyages that take him to far-off lands and bring him face to face with all manner of dangers and wonders.
On his first voyage, Sindbad sets out on a trading mission to the island of Serendib, now known as Sri Lanka. Along the way, he encounters a group of giant birds who attack and carry off one of his companions. Sindbad and the remaining members of his crew manage to escape and make their way to Serendib, where they are greeted with great hospitality by the king.

Sindbad's third voyage takes him to the land of the Waq Waq, a race of people with the bodies of men and the heads of birds. He also encounters a giant, one-eyed monster known as a "roc," and barely escapes with his life after the creature attacks and carries off one of his companions.
Sindbad's fourth voyage brings him to the land of the gold-hoarding one-eyed cyclops, who try to capture and eat him and his companions. Sindbad outwits the cyclops and escapes with a great deal of gold and other treasure.
On his fifth voyage, Sindbad travels to the land of the giant talking serpents, where he narrowly avoids being turned into a serpent himself. He also visits a city of stone, where the inhabitants are all turned to stone by a curse. Sindbad manages to break the curse and restore the people to their human form.
Sindbad's sixth voyage takes him to the land of the cunning and deceitful old man of the sea, who tries to trick Sindbad into giving up his life and becoming a spirit. Sindbad outwits the old man and escapes, returning home with even more treasure and valuable knowledge.
Sindbad's seventh and final voyage is perhaps the most treacherous of all, as he must navigate through a sea of sand and confront a group of robbers who try to steal his treasure. Despite all the dangers he faces, Sindbad emerges victorious and returns home with even more wealth and fame.
