It was almost impossible to keep track of the characters, and as others have noted, this book has not aged well at all. The show itself takes a backseat to the working characters: a witty behind the scenes look at those putting the show together. Had this old pom pom thing from Homecoming and I ripped off some of the strings to add to the page. Instead of having a scrapbook album with page protectors, a smash book is a journal in which you can do all sorts of things as you feel like doing them, capturing ideas by writing, drawing, painting, or pasting memorabilia and other embellishments. Everything in it was about getting my drivers license for the first time. I'm a huge fan of Kanin's writing — he was the author of the brilliant Born Yesterday — but here, his style seems a bit dated and stilted.

I did like some of the some story…I even started rooting for some characters and hoping the worst for others. All you need is a book to smash things in — a smash book.
