Bryon Douglas Character Analysis in That Was Then, This Is Now

You can hear some pretty neat stuff that way. Teenagers love the gritty realism of this novel and the story of a boy's inner turmoil. As they beat him, Bryon passes out. What is the most important lesson Ponyboy learns? The story's great, the book's great but I will never forgive Bryon for what he did. Charlie came to the rescue just in time but got shot. He also becomes more selfless when he begins a relationship with a classmate named Cathy, as his love for her prompts him to consider her perspective and prioritize her needs over his own.

It's just as gritty and real as Outsiders but it's time period is set a bit later. There's drug use to the point of brain damage. He's stunned when he hears the story of a hospitalized boy who refuses to hate his attackers, even though he had tried to help their friend. The heartbreak was still there when I reached the end, but it was a memory of the original heartbreak. Bryon recalls the time when he seethed at the idea that Cathy had been attracted to Mark; now, he wonders what it would be like to feel that way your whole life.

Mark was small and compact, with strange golden eyes and hair to match and a grin like a friendly lion. Meanwhile, the financial strife at home grows worse. It got to the point where I'm not even sure if these characters are at all developed - perhaps they just have a lot of informed traits. Ponyboy has faced many challenges in his life, but he always manages to overcome them. At least I assume we're still in Tulsa, OK since Ponyboy was there, and I'm pretty sure that's where The Outsiders was set. Its a great short read that will alter your soul.

There's just no forward motion behind this book. Allowing the reader to do some work in picking up on character traits is essential in keeping the reader engaged - without that, there's no reason for the reader to stay interested. Mark however is not happy with this and wants things to remain just as they have always been. Bryon asks Cathy to go out again; he really likes her. At the end of the novel, Bryon no longer feels like a carefree child and realizes that there are consequences in life. I'd love to have a book about Mark. It very raw in its emotions, and uncensored in censored kinda way.

Seems like more than one person lost their mind. The story's great, the book's great but I will never forgive Bryon for what he did. Unfortunately, Mark is the unintended recipient of a bottle to the head. One night, Bryon and Mark pick up a drunk Angela Shepard, now married, who reminisces with them. Mark still just lives for the thrill of the moment.

Hinton knows how to write books that really make you think. This review can also be found I think I've read The Outsiders at least 6 times but strangely I've never read any other of Hinton's books until now. I also feel that the personal development of the characters was better portrayed than in The Outsiders. What prompts him to grow weary of all the violence that surrounds him on a daily basis? Maybe he will outgrow it someday, but right now it's important. They pulled him from the car and nearly beat him to death when the girl lied, claiming Mike hurt her. I had aimed to read 40 books this year and this is my 140th so please believe me when I say I am PROUD of myself! I loved this--especially the dark turn it took.

The characters are are very well developed making you feel everything they do, which I dont always find is possible with such short books, but it achieved completely here. Bryon also realizes that he loves Cathy, but he has a hard time telling her so. This is evident by his resilience in the face of obstacles and his refusal to give up on himself. It was great to see cameos of the characters from The Outsiders. Mark observes how he and Bryon diverge over time, and how tension builds between them. This book is about the criminal life of 16 year old Bryon.

Minneapolis Star and Tribune. It underscores how Bryon has become an adult, capable of taking responsibility for his actions and of retaining humility, knowing that he might not have made all the right choices. Of course, the frankness and bold honesty over the years h It really is amazing to me that this author, a female, can get into the head of a male teenager, to such a degree that she so completely reveals his thoughts, his actions, his justifications, his excuses, etc. Bryon felt a sense of relief and happiness at the end of the story. And how awesome is it that Ponyboy makes a brief appearance in this? It is why I give it 5 Stars.

I really tried to like this book. It was different for me though, because I had quit thinking only about myself, quit pushing for all I could get. After Bryon is caught hustling, Charlie the local bar owner tries to save him from getting beaten up. Hinton did a great job with suspense and twists. Mark told Bryon that he could've stopped if he didn't want him to sell them. Their good friend Charlie ran the bar they would hustle in.
