The Bachelor of Arts is a novel by Muriel Spark, first published in 1954. The novel follows the life of a young man named John Malcolm Brinnin, who is studying English literature at a university in Scotland.

Brinnin is a talented and ambitious student, but he is also deeply insecure and prone to self-doubt. He is constantly seeking validation and approval from those around him, and he is frequently at odds with his own feelings and desires.

As the novel progresses, Brinnin becomes increasingly obsessed with the poet Dylan Thomas, whose work he admires and studies. Brinnin becomes convinced that he is destined to become Thomas's literary manager and promote his work to the wider world.

However, this ambition becomes a source of conflict for Brinnin, as he struggles to balance his own desires with the needs and expectations of those around him. He is torn between his love for literature and his desire for success and recognition, and he ultimately must make a difficult decision about his future.

The Bachelor of Arts is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that explores the complex relationship between art, ambition, and self-discovery. Spark's writing is sharp and insightful, and she deftly captures the emotions and inner turmoil of her characters.

Overall, The Bachelor of Arts is a compelling and beautifully written novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy literary fiction and coming-of-age stories. It is a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience and the challenges we face as we navigate the complexities of life and our own identities.

Book Review: "The Bachelor of Arts" by R.K. Narayan

the bachelor of arts book review

It's more of a coming of age book with cultural critique and social commentary woven within. This story made me realize that he writes for common man of no era in particular. I liked the bachelor's growth journey but I had a very hard time with the ramblings pages at a time about his favorite poet and his favorite basketball team. There is a lot more to the world of boys than just what the author saw from the point of view of boys. The Brits and their world is mostly off stage.

She also comes with a lot of money for her dowry, which is interesting. Nobody else can do as good a job as he does with the way he deals with it. It did not matter which side one was fighting for, both set of soldiers were deeply motivated by the ideals of the American Founding Fathers and the American Revolution. Have we not experienced the loss after tending to our garden with care, of lovely flowers, which we desired to decorate the Gods with? The stream of consciousness, character-driven narrative shifts from confusing and pedantic to breathtakingly beautiful. His heart is broken by the news, and even more so when he sees his crush getting married. Review : Bachelor of Arts by R.K. Narayan

the bachelor of arts book review

It was both gentle in tone and plot, but also clever in the ideas it explored and occasional profound in its expression of those ideas. I thought the first half of the book was incredibly boring, and I nearly gave up. I wonder when the book was first drafted, because the season the author used was Brad Womack's second season! I can't explain it, but I can't deny it, either. But the alliance is discarded because of Astrological issues. This one was really not for me. Is it a cultural critique? I loved learning more about Berryman and Beryl and have spent hours since reading online about their love and unlove of one another. It's actually pretty impressive as a debut novel so if you love the show or not it's worth a read! I had to read John Berryman in college and have never done so for pleasure, so I didn't care at all about the even more frequent and even longer passages about Berryman's life and writing process.

McPherson writes that the men also fought to defend their manhood and honor. This novel is an amalgamation of many aspects of literature that I find immersive and enthralling. His friendship with Ramu and their mutual admiration for each other is well handled. He was an author of sorts and was working on a biography of Berryman which took up much of the narrative of this book in his research. Alas, we all take our place in society and make the best of it. When he really falls in love with a girl and gets married, he realises that he has to take care of things. It has always been that oddity of imaginative earthy characters of R.

It is also very poorly written. The extremely low average rating of this debut novel is due to a mismatch with readers. He thinks that he should run away from home. He is able to reconnect only with one of his friends. She moves on, life goes on. He confides in a friend Laura, about each love but doesn't heed her advice since he is not hon This book was not what I expected.

But this is literary fiction. The book opens with Chandran, a final B. These juxtaposing preoccupations end up serving two points. Intellectually ambitious and thought-provoking, The Bachelor is also an absorbing coming-of-age tale that tells the story of finding one's footing in love and art. At the end the rambling started in again and I had a very hard time wanting to finish the book.
