Aaaaand, I didn't get it. As a reader, I don't know what's happening. Despite the fact that this book was a National Book Award winner, I passed it up for many years until one of the students I work with recommended it thanks Katherine! Though it's been compared to Watership Down and Animal Farm, the only similarities it has is that the main characters are animals. The novel is also iconoclastic because it challenges ancient ideas as well, revealing a battle between good and evil that is NOT black and white, but rather nuanced and psychological. Gritty, realism, heart-breaking, and thoughtful.
The story takes place at a time when humans have not yet made an appearance upon the Earth a time before the While Chauntecleer spends his days dealing with a rogue rat that has invaded his coop, and trying to become accustomed to a newcomer, Mundo Cani, a depressed dog that is always crying out in anguish, the reader is shown another country from across the river. He throws the monster's head into the river, and Wyrm announces his presence. Sure, you could read this, but why don't you go read something good instead? It is nothing like Watership Down, which is a hero quest for rabbits, but instead in more of the tradition of Aesop or the medieval tales featuring Reynard. That holds true for The Book of the Dun Cow. I cannot tell you why.

Our rooster hero is not John Wayne; he has doubts and makes mistakes, just like us.

It owes much to Chaucer, and not just the name of the protagonist, Chanticleer. It was obviously a big inspration for White Wolf's original Werewolf RPG. .
Unbeknownst to the animals, they are the keepers of Unwyrm's prison, and so it is up to them--Chanticleer and his pals Mundi Cani Dog and John Wesley Weasel--to defeat Cockatrice and Unwyrm in an apocalyptic battle. No, for the fox does lie down with the chickens as it were. Wyrm falls for the trap, and when he sticks out his bright white eye, that he might see his opponent, the dog leaps onto his eye and impales it with the horn in his mouth. This is one of those books I wish I had read sooner, and might well read again because of the depths in this seemingly simple story that need more than one reading to explore. It owes much to Chaucer, and not just the name of the protagonist, Chanticleer. .

I'm only about two thirds or so of the way through this story, but I have to note that I am thoroughly enjoying this allegorical animal tale. Definitely a book I'd read again. But this was an accident to my collection and such a happy accident it has been. This unique book, written in 1978, is grisly, gritty, earthy, painful, and beautiful. The Book of the Dun Cow is a beautiful novel written by the famous author Walter Wangerin Jr. Michael: compline is accented on first syllable and rhymes with pin, not pine. One chapter would evoke excitement, illumination, and empathy, and then the next chapter would be confusing, off-putting, and a chore to read.

If you have a penchant for epic, then "tolle lege" and read on! They wait for a time, building up their forces, beginning to wonder if this evil really exists. Book of the Dun Cow is a book of its own and Wangerin has a unique voice that you can hear as you read his emotionally charged words. I had to laugh at the capers of the turkeys, even while I was getting the lesson of the danger that their lingering pouting posed to everyone and especially to themselves. What the animals did not know was that they were the Keepers of Wyrm, monster of evil long imprisoned beneath the earth. Were there comments about market research, about finding an audience or connecting with readers? It is a Medieval morality play, characters sharply drawn, clean-cut bestial caricatures—but they are fully human. Such is The Book of the Dun Cow. Everything fits together and the comic interplay between the "office" of animals that's what it reminded me of kept it all rolling along.
