The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a historical fiction novel by John Boyne. The story is narrated by Bruno, a young boy who is the son of a high-ranking Nazi officer. Bruno's family is forced to leave their comfortable home in Berlin and move to a house called "Out-With" in Poland, where Bruno's father is tasked with overseeing a concentration camp.
At first, Bruno is upset about having to leave his friends and his familiar life in Berlin. But he is quickly distracted by the strange new surroundings at Out-With, which is surrounded by a fence and filled with people wearing striped pajamas. Bruno becomes curious about these people and begins to explore the camp, eventually making a friend in a boy his own age named Shmuel, who is imprisoned in the camp.
As Bruno spends more time with Shmuel, he begins to realize the true nature of the concentration camp and the atrocities that are being committed there. He becomes increasingly distressed by the suffering of the prisoners and the cruelty of the guards.

He enjoys exploring Berlin with his best friends and avoiding the company of his big sister, Gretel. The family moves to a new home. It has also been adapted into a movie, ballet, and an opera. Bruno tells Shmuel, and Shmuel shares that he has been unable to find his father.
