The Monk by Matthew Lewis is a Gothic novel that was published in 1796. It tells the story of a young Spanish monk named Ambrosio who is renowned for his piety and virtue. Jung points out that, although the descent is what Freud would call a regression, it is undertaken with a positive aim. The critics themselves seem aware of this tendency of the work, and therefore endeavour to deprive the author of the defence, by roundly asserting that "a romance is incapable of exemplifying moral truth; and that he who could rise superior to all earthly temptation, and whom the strength of the spiritual world alone would be adequate to overwhelm, might reasonably be proud, and would fall with glory. It is difficult to surmise why Lewis should have preferred the rather abrupt ending and the little tag of trite morality to the more violent yet far more effective description. The main character uses special means of the speech to make the reader feel compassion for him, and to shift his own blame to others though he is nothing more than a wicked and spiritually dead, morally corrupted, hypocrite.
