Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play written by William Shakespeare in the late 16th century. The play tells the story of two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who are caught in the middle of a long-standing feud between their two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Despite the strong opposition of their families, Romeo and Juliet fall deeply in love and are determined to be together.

On the other side of town, Romeo, a Montague, is hopelessly in love with a woman named Rosaline, who has vowed to remain chaste. Romeo's friend, Benvolio, suggests that they attend the Capulet's masked ball in the hopes of finding someone else to distract Romeo from his unrequited love. At the ball, Romeo and Juliet meet and fall instantly in love. They sneak away from the party and spend the night together.
The next morning, Romeo learns that Juliet is a Capulet and realizes the gravity of their situation. He is forced to leave Juliet's bedchamber and return home, but not before promising to marry her. Juliet, meanwhile, is confronted by her father and told that she must marry Paris on Thursday. Desperate and heartbroken, Juliet turns to Friar Laurence for help.
The Friar suggests that Juliet take a potion that will make her appear dead for forty-two hours, after which he will send word to Romeo and they can be together. Juliet agrees to the plan and takes the potion. When Romeo receives the news that Juliet is dead, he becomes inconsolable and decides to end his own life. He purchases poison from an apothecary and goes to Juliet's tomb, where he finds Juliet's lifeless body. He drinks the poison and dies beside Juliet.
When Juliet awakens from her slumber, she discovers Romeo's lifeless body next to her. Juliet takes Romeo's dagger and kills herself, unable to live without her beloved Romeo. The play ends with the Prince of Verona declaring that the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet have finally brought an end to the long-standing feud between the Capulets and the Montagues.
