The prophet Joel is one of the minor prophets in the Hebrew Bible, and his book is part of the collection known as the Twelve Minor Prophets. According to traditional Jewish and Christian teachings, Joel was a prophet who lived in the 9th century BCE, during the reign of King Joash of Judah.
The book of Joel is divided into three chapters, and it consists mainly of a series of oracles and visions that Joel received from God. The first chapter of Joel describes a devastating locust plague that has swept over the land, causing widespread destruction and devastation. In response to this disaster, Joel calls on the people of Judah to repent and turn back to God, promising that if they do so, God will restore their land and bring them prosperity.
The second chapter of Joel continues the theme of repentance and restoration, but it also includes a prophecy of a future time when God will pour out his Spirit upon all people, young and old, male and female. This prophecy is often seen as foreshadowing the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, as described in the New Testament book of Acts.
The third and final chapter of Joel describes a future time of judgment, when God will punish the nations that have opposed him and bring salvation to his people. This chapter includes a promise of God's protection and care for his people, and it ends with a call to trust in God and to rejoice in his salvation.
Throughout the book of Joel, the prophet emphasizes the importance of repentance and turning back to God. He calls on the people of Judah to return to the Lord with all their heart, and he promises that if they do so, God will be merciful and restore them. The book of Joel also points to the coming of the Holy Spirit and the future judgment of God, reminding the people of Judah (and all readers of the Bible) to trust in God and to seek his righteousness.

There are many important truths in this book. The great sin of the nations, the Gentile world-powers, is the sin against Israel. Who knoweth He may return and repent And leave a blessing behind, An oblation and a drink offering For Jehovah your God. For the wine-press is full, The vats overflow; For their wickedness is great. Egypt shall be a desolation And Edom shall be a desolate wilderness.

Liberal scholars cite further evidence from the mention of Greeks in 36. It isn't in the Devil's hands. As we have shown the literal locusts in their different stages were symbolical of nations laying waste the land as the locusts had done. The latter was certainly well acquainted with the writings of the former. The judgment is mentioned as reaping and treading the winepress, the same as in Revelation 14:14-20. Unless our heart is really rent before him, torn garments mean nothing. Therefore, their characters cannot be as easily described as in the case of some of the earlier prophets. For the whole force of the words, as employed by Amos, depends on being recognized by his hearers, as a renewal of the prophecy of Joel. His writing style is clear, lucid, powerful, full of dramatic expression and figures of speech. In the Praises at Matins on the Sunday following the Nativity, he refers to Joel 2:30, saying that the blood refers to the Incarnation, the fire to the Divinity, and the pillars of smoke to the Holy Spirit.

In Zechariah 14 we read of the same events which are here predicted. Jehovah will be a refuge for His people. Joel apparently wrote his book a few years after Joash was made king and Judah enjoyed spiritual reform, even if only temporarily. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I Jehovah am your God, and none else. For when He reigns there will be righteousness and peace; glory will cover the earth as the waters cover the deep. Thus we read in the commentary of Patrick and Lowth: "This verse 30 and the following verse principally point out the destruction of the city and the temple of Jerusalem by the Romans, a judgment justly inflicted upon the Jewish nation for their resisting the Holy Spirit and contempt of the means of grace. He has already seen beyond to the time of the invasion of Israel. Amon 1:2 seems to refer to Joel 3:16, and Amos 9:13 to Joel 3:18. But in their midst will also be found a God-fearing remnant. Isaiah: The phrase "in that day" is found many times in his book.

In order to get that person or nation to listen and turn, God will permit all kinds of harsh things to obstruct their wayward path. Just as G-d punished the land with this terrible event, so He would do in the near and distant future when a nation from the north would invade the Land. Hence we see in the first chapter the penitential lamentations of old and young, priests and people. Obadiah, who lived about the same time as Joel, speaks of the day in verse 15 of his brief prophecy. But all he is after is that repentant heart.

Numerous guesses have been made about his personality. He says that following Israel's restoration there is going to be an indeterminate period when God will pour out his Spirit on all flesh, when no distinctions will be made between classes or ranks of people, when even servants, menservants, and maidservants shall speak as the voice of God. He says: Hear this, aged men, give ear, all inhabitants of the land! A part of the people are back in the land, having returned there in unbelief, just as we see it today in the Zionistic movement. You see, the future is in God's hands. The Lord uses these destructive hosts to humble His people, to show them that He is their help, when this great calamity is upon them. Of late this term, too, has been strangely misapplied.
