The Time Machine is a science fiction novel written by H.G. Wells in 1895. The novel tells the story of a scientist named George who has built a machine that allows him to travel through time.
The Time Machine begins with a group of friends discussing the possibility of time travel over dinner. George is convinced that time travel is possible and has been working on a machine that will allow him to do so. His friends are skeptical, but George is determined to prove them wrong.
George's time machine is a small, circular device that is powered by a small motor. He climbs inside the machine and sets the controls to take him forward in time. As he travels through time, George sees the world change around him. He witnesses the rise and fall of civilizations, the evolution of life on Earth, and the eventual extinction of the human race.
As he continues to travel through time, George becomes increasingly isolated and alone. He is the only human left in a world filled with strange and terrifying creatures. Despite this, he remains determined to find a way to return to his own time.
Eventually, George discovers that the key to returning home lies in the past. He travels back in time to the moment when he first set off on his journey and makes the necessary adjustments to his machine. He returns home to find that only a few hours have passed since he left, and his friends are amazed by his incredible adventure.
The Time Machine is a classic science fiction novel that explores the possibilities of time travel and the consequences of manipulating the past and the future. It is a thought-provoking and entertaining story that continues to captivate readers to this day.

He arrives late to his own dinner party, whereupon, after eating, the Time Traveller relates his adventures to his disbelieving visitors, producing as evidence two strange white flowers Weena had put in his pocket. At the The human race has reverted to a primitive lifestyle and the Earth has healed. The project for making sense of the notion that a time machine as a probabilistic cause of the appearance of CTCs would then take the following form. The Eloi are the descendants of the British elite, and the Morlocks the descendants of the British poor—the Eloi, the Time Traveller believes, have been exploiting the Morlocks for centuries, and, as a result, have easy lives. However, the story is almost entirely told by the time traveller as a first-person account of his trip to the future. For, as will soon become clear, the time machines which have recently come into prominence in the physics literature are of an utterly different kind.

From the richly packed romance between the time traveler and Weena to the unexpected run-ins with a mischievous bunch of evolved humans called Morlocks down to several time trips in an actual time machine. Retrieved 31 March 2021. The physics literature contains various no-go theorems for time machines, i. Weena then shows George an ancient museum where "talking rings" tell of long-ago war between east and west that lasted 326 years and contaminated the atmosphere. In Sections 2 and 3 we investigate the circumstances under which it is plausible to see a Thornian time machine at work. Alexander stops in 635,427,810, revealing a harsh, rust-colored sky over a wasteland of Morlock caves. After many years' absence, the Time Traveller returns and describes his further adventures. We will indicate the shape of some of these problems here, but will refer the interested reader elsewhere for technical details.

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells Plot Summary
Time machines may never see daylight, and perhaps so for principled reasons that stem from basic physical laws. The difference takes a bit of explaining. The Time Traveller runs, too—he escapes, but Weena dies, and his matchbox disappears. He sees them eating meat, which tells him they are carnivorous, unlike the Eloi. We conclude that, even apart from general doubts about a probabilistic account of causation, the resort to a probabilistic conception of time machines is a desperate stretch, at least in the context of classical general relativity theory. In sum, studying the possibilities for operating a time machine turns out to be not a scientifically peripheral or frivolous weekend activity but a useful way of probing the foundations of classical and quantum theories of gravity. The Time Traveller tells the narrator to wait for him for a half hour, but the narrator says, sadly, that it has been three years and the narrator has not returned. George sets fires and urges the Eloi to climb to the surface. The Über-Morlocks are a caste of telepaths who rule the other Morlocks, and use the Eloi as breeding vessels for their Morlock offspring. In 1977, Polish painter Waldemar Andrzejewski adapted the novel as a 22-page comic book, written in Polish by Antoni Wolski. Retrieved 15 July 2018. Both loop quantum gravity and string theory have demonstrated the ability to cure some of the curvature singularities of classical general relativity theory. But causal determinism can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with CTCs or other acausal features of relativistic spacetimes, and it seems only fair to ensure that these modes of failure have been removed before proceeding to discuss the prospects for time machines.

But aside from paradoxes, the main payoff of the topic of time machines is that it provides a quick route to the heart of a number of foundations problems in classical general relativity theory and in attempts to produce a quantum theory of gravity by combining general relativity and quantum mechanics. Retrieved 21 July 2018. There are at least two distinct general notions of time machines, which we will call Wellsian and Thornian for short. But this requirement is too strong because it rules out Thornian time machines altogether.

He may be right, but to date there are no convincing arguments that such an Agency is housed in either classical general relativity theory or in semi-classical quantum gravity. Exploring these alternatives is one place that philosophers can hope to make a contribution to an ongoing discussion that, to date, has been carried mainly by the physics community. In a quantum theory of gravity, a probabilistic conception of time machines may be appropriate if the theory itself provides the transition probabilities between the relevant states. In 1903, Philby and Mrs. Another ring describes humanity's struggle for survival; many lived George enters the caverns through the air shafts.

He arrived in the year 802,701 on the spot where his laboratory once stood—it had become a garden of strange flowers beside a large white Sphinx statue. Then show that the subset of models that have CTCs to the future of the partial Cauchy surface has non-zero measure. Watchit, Alexander's housekeeper, are in his laboratory discussing his absence. But this is only one of the ways in which a time machine might operate, and in what follows any device which affects the spacetime structure in such a way that CTCs result will be dubbed a Thornian time machine. Unfortunately, no adequate and generally accepted explication that lends itself to the required mathematical proofs is to be found in the literature. So he embarks on this trip of a lifetime through time but realizes that the future is nothing like what he had envisaged or hoped for.

Participating in this discussion means that philosophers have to forsake the activity of logical gymnastics with the paradoxes of time travel for the more arduous but we believe rewarding activity of digging into the foundations of physics. We argue that at present there is no satisfactory resolution of this difficulty and, thus, that the topic of time machines in a general relativistic setting is somewhat ill-defined. If time-machine spacetimes turn out to be highly non-generic, the fan of time machines can retreat to a weaker concept of Thornian time machine by taking a page from probabilistic accounts of causation, the idea being that a time machine can be seen to be at work if its operation increases the probability of the appearance of CTCs. He briefly goes into a rage-fueled panic, and then decides that the rational course of action is to study this new world, learn its ways, and let this knowledge lead him back to the time machine.
