Make it the next book you read. You search and search for one but even books you've been looking forward to reading have lost their appeal. That's just really mean and sad for him. As I tried to describe the war and the politics and the culture and the atrocities, I could not help but think that these things happened to this young boy while I was here, in America, well-fed, abundantly-loved, and spoiled rotten. Her final dying wish was to be buried there, it was her own revenge for the terrible life her family has given her. Together with his mother, younger brother, grandparents, and a former servant, Kien learns to survive by trying to grow up early. The way he told his story, after all these years, was touching.
I came to know and care very much about him while reading his story and I would be very interested in reading how he overcame this kind of childhood to be as well-adjusted as he seems to be. I would love to see this book be required reading for high school seniors. Later on, he left his private practice and joined a group so he could work part-time and write full-time. Nguyen writes with much clarity and honesty. Kien is blessed in his grandparents, his brother and his intelligence. I have family in Vietnam my father is from there and this gives me a glimpse into what life was like for them.
It is classified as historical fiction, but it based on his grandfather, who is in this book too. As a freshmen I thought this book was sad but good at the same time. I began my review in this way to point out how we can magnify trivialities in our own lives and get stuck in ourselves, rather than looking around us with compassion and empathy at the very real suffering of others. He watched the last US Army helicopter leave without him, without his brother, his mother or his grandparents.

Kien writes openly about his suffering and his pain, reliving the nightmare of his childhood as he sought to free himself of it. A quick read - difficult to put down. Some interesting aspects I found: how Amerasians were given the opportunity to move back to the US and that some of the mixed people were actually not American, but French, the wisdom of Kien's grandparents my favorite part in the book , the rivalry and jealousy between Kien's mom and his aunt very sad. It broke my heart to find out how he would have been treated if he were growing up in a different place and a different time.

This story was so tragically moving. This time period was not only a dark time to look back on, it was also some peoples entire life. For the most part, though, this memoir reminds us of life's many undeserved injustices. They miss the evacuation and the story recounts their hardships trying to get out of the country. The smells, the flowers, the heat, and the food are all so vivid to the reader. Kien Nguyen is the son of a Vietnamese woman and an American business man. You probably know what I'm talking about - where absolutely nothing seems interesting enough to keep your mind on the book.

A really sad story told by a small boy growing up under the Communist Vietcong. Because of his hope in a better life, Kien eventually made his way to America overcoming many obstacles. It is a moving and personal record of a family's journey to America and of a tumultuous and important piece of history. Then I started The Unwanted: A Memoir of Childhood and it was the perfect book to get me out of my slump. Your novel sounds great! Amazing, true story of an Amerasian child left in Vietnam when the American soldiers left and the Communists arrived.
This is one of the "top 10 best books" I have read this year. I have a half Vietnamese child myself, and I cannot believe that anyone could ever see him as anything other than beautiful. All of the dust whipped out homes, towns, building, with pounds and pounds of dirt for many years. This book is not easy to read. Would this happen today? Why do people only value what they are about to loose? At one point, Nguyen's mother, imperious and a virulent snob, is called before the newly installed communist leadership only to encounter her former gardener, a man she barely acknowledged before the revolution but who now has the power to strip her of all she owns. The disturbing elements of political corruption and loss of human rights are lightened by moving depictions of sweet, funny moments between friends as well as deft political maneuvering by Kim herself when she was eventually questioned by authorities.
