Although i thought the punishment was understandable, I don't think Hester should take all the blame. I think Hester showed great courage in taking the blame to herself. When we think of wealthy people, we think of youthful, healthy people that are living a glamorous and easy life. Having to do a bad thing to someone is not the worst you can experience; the worst is to lose the chance to apologize. It is the idea of equality and equal worth of each human being , with such names as a method to this claim that names are of no use to explain. Everyone feels guilty about something they did. Instead she believed that everyone is beautiful inside and that the happiness is gain through the pleasure of life given by god. Later, passing the ruins, she scolds herself for mourning the loss of her wordly goods.
Something easy thing to live without would be the decorations around the house. It is highly unlikely that Hester made the man have an affair with her; it is more possible that the man forced Hester to do what he wanted. Even if they didn't make her stand in the middle of the market, people would know about the what she did and would also treated her badly. People that are possibly hounded by the world are probably international criminals, or celebrities. The Rationalists, on the other hand, believe in using reason to prove everything. I think material possessions are pretty important to me.
