A Complicated Kindness is a coming-of-age novel by Miriam Toews that tells the story of Nomi Nickel, a young Mennonite girl growing up in the small town of East Village, Manitoba. The novel follows Nomi as she navigates the complexities of growing up in a community that values tradition and conformity above all else, while also struggling with the loss of her mother and the estrangement of her father.
At the start of the novel, Nomi is a rebellious and disillusioned teenager who feels trapped in her isolated and oppressive community. She longs to break free from the strict rules and expectations of the Mennonite church, and is desperate to leave East Village and experience the wider world. However, Nomi's desire for independence is constantly thwarted by the narrow-mindedness of her community and the absence of her parents, who have both abandoned her in their own ways.
Despite the challenges she faces, Nomi remains fiercely independent and determined to carve out a life for herself. She finds solace in music and literature, and becomes friends with a group of outsiders who share her love for rock and roll. These friendships offer Nomi a sense of belonging and acceptance that she has been lacking in her own community, and give her the strength to continue fighting for her dreams.
As Nomi grows older and comes to terms with the losses she has suffered, she begins to understand the complexities of kindness and forgiveness. She learns that her mother's abandonment was not a personal failing on her part, but rather a manifestation of the mental illness that plagued her throughout her life. Nomi also comes to see that her father's strict adherence to Mennonite tradition was not a lack of love, but rather a way for him to cope with the pain of his own past.
Through Nomi's journey, A Complicated Kindness portrays the struggles and triumphs of growing up in a restrictive and conservative community, and the importance of finding one's own path in life. It is a moving and thought-provoking novel that speaks to the universal experience of finding one's place in the world.

Living quietly with my disappointments. Nomi is growing up trapped in a small Mennonite community called East Village in the middle of nowhere, in Canada. Like Nomi, Trudie has a habit of finding beauty in the most seemingly disturbing of scenes. Shortly after that, Trudie leaves the family as well, without saying goodbye to Nomi. Finally, doing small acts of kindness makes you a good role model for younger people. It feels like an adventure.

AllReaders is a user-sourced site, collecting reviews from the general public. Nomi astutely points out that the Mennonite community actually has some attributes in common with the hippie cults of the 70s, whose values the church opposes. So, although my kindness to this book is complicated, I give it two stars: the first, because I have to and the second because the book surprisingly made me passionate. However, to know and to act are two different things. After Nomi obtains birth control from a sympathetic doctor, she and Travis have sex.

This book tore my heart out and left me unsettled, reflecting on the unanswered questions and the fantasy of a 16yo girl who wished to live in Greenwich Village, working for Lou Reed. Miriam may have taken a real-life experience straight to her novel, but 16-year-old Nomi Nickel became a larger-than-life character in her own right. I find myself relating to Nomi quite a bit, okay maybe not the part where her mother and sister ran away, or the part where she smokes cigarettes religiously, or the part where she lives in a house where the furniture keeps diminishing, but the part where Nomi is just plain, old, lost Nomi.
