Alvin and Judith Neelley were a couple who gained infamy in the 1980s for committing a series of brutal murders in the southeastern United States. The Neelleys' crimes were particularly heinous, as they targeted young girls and women, often torturing and mutilating their victims before killing them.
Alvin Neelley was born in 1952 and grew up in a troubled household. He had a history of violence and criminal behavior, and spent much of his youth in and out of jail. In 1980, he met Judith Ann Smith, a teenage girl who was also troubled and had a history of run-ins with the law. The two began a tumultuous relationship and eventually married in 1981.
In 1982, the Neelleys began their killing spree with the abduction and murder of 13-year-old Lisa Ann Millican. They then abducted and murdered 18-year-old Janice Chatman, before turning their attention to 17-year-old Debra May Helmick. Helmick was abducted, tortured, and left for dead, but miraculously survived and was able to provide authorities with a description of her attackers.
The Neelleys continued their killing spree, murdering several more young women before being apprehended in September 1982. Alvin Neelley was sentenced to death, while Judith Neelley received life in prison.
The Neelleys' crimes shocked and horrified the public, and their case garnered widespread media attention. They were known for their extreme cruelty and callousness, and their spree of murders remains one of the most notorious in American history. Despite their heinous actions, the Neelleys have never shown remorse for their crimes and continue to serve out their sentences.
