American Son is a novel written by Brian Ascalon Roley, a Filipino-American author. It tells the story of an American soldier named Rick, who is of Filipino descent, and his experiences as he navigates the complexities of race, identity, and family while serving in the United States military.
Rick's journey begins when he enlists in the military, hoping to prove his loyalty to his country and to escape the poverty and discrimination he faced growing up as a Filipino immigrant in Los Angeles. He is deployed to the Middle East, where he finds himself caught in the midst of a brutal and ongoing war.
As Rick fights for his country, he also struggles with his own sense of identity and belonging. He grapples with the expectations placed on him as a model minority and with the way his ethnicity is viewed by his fellow soldiers and the larger society.
At the same time, Rick is also trying to reconnect with his estranged father, who abandoned him and his mother when Rick was a child. Through flashbacks, we see Rick's difficult relationship with his father and the impact this had on his upbringing and worldview.
As Rick grapples with these issues, he also confronts the harsh realities of war and the toll it takes on him and those around him. He is faced with difficult moral dilemmas and is forced to confront the consequences of his actions.
Ultimately, American Son is a poignant and thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of race, identity, and family in America. It shows the ways in which these issues intersect and how they can shape an individual's experiences and perceptions of the world. It is a powerful and moving novel that will resonate with readers of all backgrounds.
