Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" is a dystopian novel set in a future world where society has collapsed and the few remaining survivors live in a world ravaged by environmental destruction and genetic engineering. The story follows the character of Jimmy, a young man who is one of the few remaining humans after a mysterious disaster wipes out most of humanity.
At the beginning of the novel, Jimmy is living in a place called the Compounds, which are gated communities that are home to the wealthy elite. That way, in time, all girls may be able to grow up believing that there are no avenues that are closed to them simply because they are girls.
