The Modern Language Association (MLA) style is a widely used format for writing papers in the humanities and liberal arts. One of the key features of MLA style is the use of a specific format for citing sources in the text of the paper and in a Works Cited page at the end.
An example of an MLA-formatted research paper might include the following elements:
One-inch margins on all sides of the page
Double-spacing throughout the entire paper, including the Works Cited page
A header that includes the student's last name and the page number in the top right corner of every page
A title page that includes the title of the paper, the student's name, the course name and number, and the date
Times New Roman font, size 12
In-text citations that include the author's last name and the page number(s) of the source, placed in parentheses at the end of the relevant sentence or clause
A Works Cited page at the end of the paper, which lists all of the sources cited in the text in alphabetical order by author's last name. Each entry in the Works Cited page should include the following information:
Author's last name and first name
Title of the work
Title of the container (e.g. book, journal, website)
Other contributors (e.g. editor, translator)
Version (e.g. edition, volume)
Number (e.g. volume, issue)
Publisher
Publication date
Location (e.g. page numbers for a book, URL for a website)
Here is an example of an in-text citation and a corresponding entry in the Works Cited page:

By following the MLA format, students can present their research in a professional and consistent manner, making it easier for readers to focus on the content of their paper rather than its presentation.
