Uma is forced into preparing for her eventual role as wife and mother, no longer allowed to inhabit the public sphere when her true domain is supposed to be in the private. One of them prefers her younger sister; one of them gets engaged to her just so he and his family can access her dowry, but then backs off; and then the man she does marry ends up already being married—again, a scheme to get her dowry—and she returns home, deemed unmarriageable. And since they said that Uma had grey hair and was starting to stoop and shrink, I imagined Uma as someone who was around the age of fifties to sixties. He is able to do three laps while they do one, and then tells them they are going too slowly. I liked the juxtaposition of part one and part two. The pictures that she paints with her prose are startlingly realistic, yet also gentle. Although she is not so smart in reading, yet she has a passion for reading.
Not a good marketing strategy - I have no desire to read any more by Anita Desai. Her writing is full of charm, at times contextually humorous and the characters she creates are extremely relatable, albeit slightly one dimensional. He also firmly believes in the value of a foreign degree as opposed to an Indian one, sending Arun abroad rather than letting him stay in India. This seems a real possibility in light of his leaving behind their gifts, which is almost like leaving them all behind as well. I'm not sure how the second part fitted with the first, but no matter, the second was a satirical look at USA food and customs seen through the eyes of an Indian lad on a University placement in Massachusetts, while the first part concerned his put upon sister Uma and her parents' attempts to marry her off.

Uma remembers that when her father was still a magistrate and the family had to make appearances at social gatherings, he would tolerate joking with colleagues and inferiors who jabbed at him—but always in a way that was harsh, establishing his superiority and social status. Mama would observe the games proudly, and she would get angry if his tennis suit hadn't been washed perfectly or if his lemonade wasn't ready when the game was over. If the first and second parts of this beautiful tale about dysfunction in families are somehow connected, then I must have missed the connection. They map the evolution of a writer from obsession with the unrevealed inner-world of her female characters to themes of perennial interest to all.

And for all of their faults I never viewed her family as hopeless. The portrayal of the marriage market, with husbands being wooed by parents on behalf of their daughters, in return for dowries, is powerful and haunting. By reading this book the reader is offered the unique experience of not only learning about the culture of India but also seeing the American culture compared side-by-side to this. So she doesn't have the nerve to be an individual. . It is a beautifully written study of characters, a skillful set of observations, but it offers no answers, only presentations of comparisons.

You see, the fact that I'm reading this book for school purposes did not occur to me in the beginning, I was just simply enjoying the book.
