The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. These experiments would become important to scientists studying evolution because the genes the experiments eventually revealed that the basic genes in all animals are the same; they're simply put to different uses in different animals. She later died by suicide. She explains to Amy that she understands her daughter's need to fit in and be American but also reminds Amy to always remain Chinese on the inside. But what good would it do, right? Amy was embarrassed by the selection of food her mother prepared being that her guest was American.
