How the Narcissus Got its Name
And so, in some sense, we kill ourself, like so many ambitious or self-centred people. But no body remained - in its place was a flower. Narcissus was raised in Boeotia a region in central Greece and grew into an extremely handsome youth. One of many stories of Narcissus says that he was so distinguished by his beauty that everyone who saw him instantly fell in love with him. Narcissus eventually perishes by the pool with Echo as a witness, repeating the farewell she heard him say to his reflection. His beauty became known, and men and women alike were said to be throwing themselves at him. She wasted away in her grief to a mere voice. In this telling, the spring in front of which Narcissus wastes away is located on a mountain top and is part of the river Lamus in a place called Donacon.
