The contradiction between these two images is also a contradiction at the bottom of the poem. No sooner has the speaker asked this question — and you see this rhythm, this dynamic, appear continually throughout Lycidas— he asks the question, and then immediately he acknowledges the inadequacy of the question. A jester at the court of his master, indulged and disesteemed, winning a clement master's praise. Look what happened to Edward King. Orpheus was the poet who had attempted to bring his wife, Eurydice, back from the underworld, and he did that by charming Pluto with his song. According to Ovid, the Arethuse formed after a river nymph attempted to run from a river god. Nonetheless, the fact that he attempted to be a poet, I think, is important here. Edward King, in fact, seems to have been sufficiently well liked or admired that when news of his death hit Cambridge, a group of his friends organized something like an anthology of poems in his honor. Now, Lycidas, the shepherds weep no more: Henceforth thou art the Genius of the shore, In thy large recompense, and shalt be good To all that wander in that perilous flood.

But now my oat proceeds, And listens to the Herald of the Sea, That came in Neptune's plea. Where were ye, Nymphs, when the remorseless deep Clos'd o'er the head of your lov'd Lycidas? Pastoral poetry becomes an allegory for all the conventions for expressing grief—the pomp of funerals, speeches, burials—indeed, of any ceremony that tries to master a feeling that can never truly be contained. They together- Lycidas and Milton - began their study early in the morning, continued throughout the day late into the night. A famous, and famously complex, elegiac poem by Milton, in which he ostensibly mourns the loss of his friend Edward King, but really steels himself for a career writing the epic poetry that is to follow in Paradise Lost. The conclusion points to a new determination both to face life hopefully, and to rise up to greater poetic achievements. The fountain now stands at the spot where the nymph tried to break through. The elegiac mourning is twice interrupted to invest the personal sorrow with universal significance.
