In 2004, the Teachers College Trustees created the Maxine Greene Chair for Distinguished Contributions to Education. You gave me the courage, as a white woman, to write about Black literature. I was one of the luckiest to chat with you in your house, thanks to your TA and Academic Computing for introducing me to you. With a weak foundation in the liberal arts I had been a chemistry major in college , I was immersed in her free-flowing and well-integrated critique and appreciation of everything from Greek philosophy, to American colonial music, to the evolution of social work and the visual arts, all while weaving in the latest films and what was on Charlie Rose last night. This is however countered with the proposal that humans can only define themselves by virtue of the projects they drive to completion, which is indirectly through education. When Greene, TC Professor Emerita of Philosophy and Education, walked into the packed auditorium at The New School, she was met with a standing ovation and loud cheering.
