Sandra Schmirler was a Canadian curler and three-time world champion who was widely regarded as one of the best curlers in the history of the sport. She was born on June 11, 1963 in Biggar, Saskatchewan, and began curling at a young age. Schmirler quickly made a name for herself as a skilled and competitive curler, and she eventually formed a team with Jan Betker, Marcia Gudereit, and Joan McCusker.
Schmirler and her team, known as the "Schmirler Four," became one of the top curling teams in the world, winning numerous national and international titles. In 1993, Schmirler led her team to victory at the Scott Tournament of Hearts, earning her the title of Canadian champion. The following year, she led her team to victory at the World Curling Championships, earning her the title of world champion.
In 1996, Schmirler and her team repeated their success at the World Curling Championships, winning their second world title. They also won a bronze medal at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998, cementing their place as one of the top curling teams in the world.
Despite her many successes on the curling rink, Schmirler was perhaps even more beloved for her generosity and kindness off the ice. She was known for her charitable work and her commitment to helping others, and she was deeply respected and admired by her peers and fans alike.
Tragically, Schmirler was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and passed away on March 2, 2000 at the age of 36. Her loss was deeply felt by the entire curling community, and she was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 2001.
Sandra Schmirler was a true champion in every sense of the word, and her legacy as one of the greatest curlers of all time will never be forgotten.

Biography Born with a club foot, curler Sandra Schmirler entered the University of Saskatchewan pursuing a degree in computer science and was an unlikely candidate for a future Olympic gold medal-winning athlete.
